Water Quality day set for June 8 near Dysart

The Tama Benton Nutrient Reduction Stratergy Committee along with the Iowa Soybean Assn. will be sponsoring a Water Quality & Structural Practices Field Day Wednesday, June 8, 2016 from 9 - 11 a.m.
Saturated buffers are a newer conservation practice aimed at reducing nitrates in water leaving through field tile lines. Saturated buiffers are one of the practices supported by the Iowa Nutrient Reduction
Stratergy.
Farmers Market season opens Thursday
The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department will kick off another Farmers Market season on Thursday, June 2.
The market will once again be hosted at the Vinton Railroad Depot from 5 to 7 PM every Thursday through September 29th. This Thursday, visitors will be able to take park in our free annual long distance balloon contest while enjoying a solo musical performance from Stephen Schmidt.

4 and 5 year old Day Camp, June 20th to 22nd from 9am to 11:30 am. This three day camp will have nature walks, art projects, and a creek stomp. This camp is limited to 20 kids. Pre-register for the camp by the 14th of June. Cost $15.
10-12 year old Overnight Camp, 10am June 28th to 11am 29th.
Summer Webinar Series Offered for Master Gardeners & General Public
Three part series provides information on shade, trees and native garden insects
Vinton, Iowa – The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Master Gardener program will host a summer webinar series in 2016. Master Gardeners will gain educational hours while learning about benefits of shade in landscape, tree problems and native garden insects.
Friends of 4-H Pie Auction
Friends of 4-H is a committee that was created by the Benton County Extension Council in June of 2015. Its purpose is to fundraise and provide scholarships for the youth enrolled in Benton County 4-H. It is the Council's hope that the additional monies provided will encourage Benton County 4-H youth to attend summer camps, conferences and programs at the local, state and national levels,
Friends of 4-H started off by having pie auctions at the Benton County Fair during the livestock shows.
Memorial Day ceremonies planned in Vinton
Weather permitting, the Memorial Day ceremonies will take place in Vinton at their traditional times and locations.
8:00AM: Military Honors at Maplewood Cemetery.
8:15AM Military Honors at St Mary's Cemetery.
8:30AM Military Honors at Evergreen Cemetery (by the Civil War Monument).
10:00AM March to the Cedar River Bridge, and tribute to Navy veterans.
College savings event set for tonight at VSHS; chance to win $1,000
Wilson-Hite Insurance and College Savings Iowa are sponsoring an informational meeting on the Iowa 529 College Savings Plan.
The event takes place tonight, May 25, at 6:30 p.m. in the Vinton-Shellsburg High School auditorium.
Participating families will learn about the benefits of using a 529 savings plan to help prepare for future education expenses, and learn how to register for a $1,000 giveaway and how to receive a $10 boost to a newly established account.
Bear Creek Church open house, Memorial Day service planned
The Bear Creek Church Open House will take place from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, May 29, at the historic church on 26th Avenue south of Brandon. A historical book will be on display and available for visitors to read.
On Memorial Day, the continental breakfast including coffee, juice and rolss will begin at 7:30 a.m. with serving continuing until 10:30.
Swilling & Quilting class set for June 29
Quilling Class – Barb Campbell will hold a “Swilling & Quilling” class on June 29th, 6:30 - 8:30. Bring an adult beverage and try this fun and delicate paper art! The class costs $15 for Vinton Guild of Fine Arts members, $20 for non-members. Classes are held at the Vinton Guild of Fine Arts’ Old School Studio, Rm.
